Course Information
Description	Advanced examination of knowledge, skills, attitudes, techniques, confidentiality and ethical guidelines applied in the counseling, treatment, prevention, and recovery of substance use disorders.

Learning Outcomes	The objective of this course is to prepare the student to be knowledgeable of the 12 core functions that are the mainstay of being a substance abuse counselor. (screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, referral, reports and record keeping, consultation) Students will understand ethical and confidential issues related to the profession. Students will be familiar with proper professional clinical documentation at each stage of the treatment process. Students will be able explain the concepts of substance use disorder counseling and recovery; identify issues of confidentiality and ethics as applied to the client; and demonstrate the skills and techniques of counseling in treatment planning. identify the major counseling theories, skills, diagnostic criteria , and appropriate level of care placement . The course meets related course content required by the Texas Department of State Health Services as a related subject course required meeting state Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) requirements.
Core Objectives	Communication Skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, and oral communication skills as applicable to field of addiction counseling, Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions as it applies to diagnosis and treatment of addiction. Empirical and Quantitative Skills: Students will demonstrate applications of scientific research related to addiction counseling. . Teamwork: Students will demonstrate the ability to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal and consider different points of view as would occur in clinical team meetings. Social Responsibility: Students will demonstrate intercultural competency and civic knowledge by engaging effectively in local, regional, national and/or global communities. * Personal Responsibility: Students will demonstrate the ability to connect choices, actions and consequences to ethical decision-making.
Program Student Learning Outcomes	Demonstrates effective, ethical, multicultural care for a diverse group of individuals within the scope of practice of a professional counselor in the field of behavioral addictions and substance use disorders. Demonstrate the ability to conduct professional screening, assessment, treatment planning, prevention and education, case coordination services, and documentation of those services as a Substance Abuse Counselor. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of the basics of counseling principles, theories and skills to include crisis management. Demonstrate knowledge of the various models and theories of behavioral addictions and substance use disorders and other problems related to addiction.
Textbooks	Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer. None - All information will be provided in power points and handouts from SAMHSA, State of Texas HHSC, Joint Commission and other sources.

Grading Scale	Grading will be Based on Following: 90 - 100 = A 80 - 89 = B 70 - 79 = C 60 - 69 = D Below 59 = F
Determination of Final Grade	The examinations will be a combination of multiple choices, fill in the blanks and essay. Your group presentation will count as your final examination (all group members will receive the same grade). Participation in Live Zoom lectures will be a requirement. 80% attendance at the time of live lecture will be considered an A. Grading will be Based on Following: Discussion Boards        20% Assignments            20% Tests:                35% Participation            12.5% Attendance             12.5% Late Assignments: 10 points will be deducted for each week an assignment is completed late. If you need an assignment reopened in order to finish it late, you will be required to send the instructor an email asking for specific assignment / discussion board to be reopened. Assignments / Discussion boards will not be reopened 2 weeks past the due date unless your inability to complete the assignment was due to a documented medical or family emergency.

Attendance Policy	Research has shown a strong positive relationship between attendance, participation and college success. I strongly suggest regular participation in this course, both mental and physical. 1. Students on campus but not in class are considered absent. 2. It is the student?s responsibility to notify the instructor prior to any absence. 3. Excused absences include hospitalization of you or an immediate family member, participation in a college event, or a religious holy day. Prior notification to me for pending absences due to college events or religious holy days is required. Documentation of hospitalization is required. The student is ultimately responsible for his/her own learning and professional growth, what you put into it is what you will get out of it!It is your responsibility to conduct a realistic self-appraisal of what you personally need to master and how you can best attain it. Challenge yourself to grow as an individual and a professional. Please respect the confidentiality of the classroom and discussions that are held.
Academic Honesty	Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
